In Bahrain riot police clashed with demonstrators burning tires and garbage at a suburban shopping center in Manama, and at least 11 people were wounded. The demonstration began as a peaceful protest by about 175 people who were demanding the release of 20 supporters of a cleric who have been detained since Dec 24. The government did not want demonstrations while the tiny island state hosted thousands of foreigners who had come for the Formula 1 Grand Prix on Mar 12.
